My first travel vacation around

Alas! A good break from my hectic working schedule! I'm so excited about traveling around to visit good old friends and relatives whom I haven't seen for quite sometime. This is my first vacation since migrating here in States and this is probably the time I've been waiting to happen. Seeing them is really giving us joy and reminisce the hurdles that we made in our lives in reaching this point in time. But most of all ........... arnis has paved a way for my migration here and convincing my wife and children that opportunities here is vast for them to build their dreams and possibly their entire future here.

For me, this is the start of a new chapter in my life of what I can provide and share to NARAPHIL's future! This is our beginning ...........

People who are adept with music, this is one beautiful classical sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven, my favorite actually .............. but sorry to say it's not!

It was composed in Japan and not in Vienna, and this is her first "maiden voyage"! Zaldie was the conductor together with his Pearl Grace crew! They stayed for sixteen days in Japan before sailing her to the seas! Yes, when he toured us around the ship with Mely, you can still smell the raw paint to all its cabin and hallways.

The crew were all Filipinos and had a real good times with them! But as usual, they are bored and have no friends or relatives around to tour them, unlike Zaldie! Unfortunately I can not also accommodate them and that they have to spend their Christmas in their ship.

Zaldie was able to do a good shopping spree, because all the stores were on for the post-Christmas sale. So he was frantic to buy things and keeps computing the prices from dollars to pesos - and says it was really a big, big discount. He started paying his items with the green bucks and the cashiers were all astonished for all the money coming out of his wallet, crispy, unblemished and most of all smells like a dollar!!! He! he! he!

Lahat ng kanyang $100 bills ay inaaninag and looking for it - counterfeit ba ito o hindi!!! We were both laughing because we looked liked hoodlums laundering the monies! Everyone is paying their bills with plastic money while Zaldie is paying it with a hard cash, and everyone is looking. Kasi naman nakadamit lang kami ng akala mong very poor baga!???

Sabi nga niya eh, "Don't worry about it, galing pa yan sa Japan, pero printed pa rin dito sa States at hindi sa Japan!". He! he! he!

Bro. Zaldie, while we were board on your ship, I keep on wondering how you manage to stay without getting sea-sick with its continous waving motion. That brief stay with you, I can really say I'm not well good probably in travelling with ships. No matter how good a swimmer I am! He! he! he!

The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold and even not sunny for your brief visit! It only implies that everything was in place for your visit! Ho! ho! ho!

I hope all our Bros. back there could have a chance to visit me here and enjoy my simple hospitality, ika nga ......... Pinoy pa rin!

A Christmas Experience

A brief visit of a friend,

a benefactor and a brother

It's 7:00 AM and a my cell phone rang with the familiar voice of - Zaldie, ......... "Manong nandito ako sa Port of Houston, Pier #16 where my ship is docked!". "Do you want me to pick you up now?" and he answered, "Not yet, when I'm done with my refueling job then you can pick me up!". "Okay then and spend the Christmas with us since we will be having a family reunion with one of my sister's house".

Wow that was really a prolific event and I'm such honored to welcome one of our most revered benefactor of our arnis activities. It's such an amazing thing and a good experience having seen a long time sparring partner, a friend, a good benefactor and most of all ..... a brother I can be proud to call!

From the Pier we went home and introduce him to the boys and Mely, while she was busy doing the cooking and preparing some stuff for the "Noche Buena". We tried driving around to the different shopping stores but it seems everyone was rushing for the the last minute shopping for Christmas ........ the line seems endless! So we decided to go around and just give him a tour of our city.

The city hall was empty with no promenaders seems to be wandering around the streets and they all seems to be busy having a buying spree in all the stores and shopping malls. It was a nice day to stroll around because of it!

And so, we went around ..................... and as usual, the old frolicsome Zaldie, a jolly and a happy fellow he is that makes you smile and laugh on his jokes and stories on his ship.

He admires our city and asks, "Bakit marami ang mga puti dito sa Amerika?". Well its the old Zaldie's corny jokes! Iba talaga ang nakakalabas at nakakababa sa barko namin, para ka kasing naka bartolina lagi! Looking the same old faces for the next 24 hrs for the next 9-10 months! He! he! he! That's life of being a seaman anyway and the pay is compensatory naman for all your boredom and hardships!

Truly they are the era of new heroes for our country ................ because they generate a lot of income for the remittances they do that amount to $10-20 billion annually! Without this OFW's Philippines should have been long gone bankrupt financially, and most of all ............ intellectually drained!

For the last three decades, we all strived hard to pursue our own career. The vision we always follow and the mission we still need to accomplish! Having someone to talk to regarding all the plans and programs that needs to done is really fulfilling and boosts your morale and the desire to continue doing them regardless of the economic down trend!

It is an investment, for the future of the organization and those people, like the young Turks, who still believes in our vision and mission in life!

A visit like this from a person like Zaldie, makes me sentimental and passionate, for all the things we started thirty years ago ............. just couldn't let go no matter how far we've gone! Probably, its really imbibed in our blood and will never, never go away from our heart!

Again, I may quote, "Who is really the loyal subject?"

Zaldie also did tried to shun away from us for seven years because of personal and family matters but ........... olah! One day he dropped by my clinic crying and desperate of his personal predicament - he was financially and emotionally drained!

Without hesitation, I presented him to Bro. Rick and ask him what can be done? I can give him money today but not tomorrow or next day - so, we gave him a rod so he can fish for himself and no longer beg for it! Thanks Bro. Rick for the chance you've given him, now he is much richer than me - kaya nga may bumalak na kumidnap sa asawa niya eh!!! He! he! he! And again you were there to protect his wife and family, caught the culprits and brought to justice!!!

By the way, that was a team effort of the LM members - Bros. Bong Liliit, Junch, Mike, Rey, Rick and others (sorry I can't remember their names). Job well done anyway!

And so his Christmas visit ends here! We can only say ..............

I always admire your commitment - to your work, family and NARAPHIL! I still keep on wondering for all these years that you still manage to be with us with such enthusiasm where other seniors have failed us! Sometimes I wonder they all started this cause, ............... and in the height of the battle .......... I only see our faces in the front line! Some gone .......... some lost ............ and some just just faded away!

It is fitting to honor you, or should I only say Thank you Bro for not giving us up and believing in our noble cause! I hope you'll remain the same when we will meet again in the future!

Yes Bro! This person I won't ever forget .......... why? When I was already low in morale and spirit for the cause we were fighting for NARAPHIL and was ready to give up .............. he suddenly rose from nowhere to my surprise and helped me out in our cause. He gave me the strength and spirit to continue our noble cause!

After seven years of untiring and selfless support to our projects and cause, I was finally at ease and confident for someone like him to hand-over the leadership. So I decided to pursue our cause to a higher level without compromising our homebase organization. It is but pleasing to thank you Bro that you came in a right time and right place when all things seem to be out of my hands!

With your loving wife, Cristy who has been so understanding and kind-hearted to support you and NARAPHIL ................. I couldn't say anything else but Thank you very much especially when you made "arnis" a part of your school curriculum!

NARAPHIL Houston Joins Fiesta of Black Nazarene 2008

What is the Black Nazarene?

The Black Nazarene refers to a life-sized, dark colored statue of Jesus Christ that was brought to the Philippines from Mexico by the first group of Augustinian Recollect friars sent by Spain. This statue was carved by an Aztec carpenter. Jesus is depicted genuflecting under the weight of the Cross that bore during his Passion.

The Black Nazarene arrived in Manila on May 31, 1606. The statue was initially brought to the first Recollect Church in what is now the Rizal Park. In 1608, it was transferred to a bigger church dedicated to San Nicolas de Tolentino in Intramuros. Then, it was transferred in 1787 by then Archbishop of Manila, Basilio Sancho de Santa Junta y Rufina, to the church in Quiapo – the name, the Black Nazarene of Quiapo. In Quiapo Church, the image survived the great fires that destroyed the Quiapo Church in 1791 and 1929. It also withstood the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863, and the destructive bombing of Manila in 1945 during the Second World War.

Why Black Nazarene?

It is said that the image was charred black in a fire that broke out on the ship during its trip to Manila from Mexico. It arrived on May 31, 1606 in this form and has always been depicted as such.

How did the devotion developed?

The devotion to the Black Nazarene started when the image was in Intramuros. In 1608, the Recollect Fathers started promoting the devotion to the Suffering of our Lord. After fifteen years, the confraternity or Cofradia de Jesus Nazareno was established on April 21, 1621. The brotherhood got its papal blessing from His Holiness Pope Innocent X on April 20, 1650. In the 19th century, Pope Pius VII granted indulgence to those who prayed before the image of the Black Nazarene. The year 2007 marked the 400th year that the Black Nazarene came to the Philippines.

Some members of the NARAPHIL Houston group extend their civic services to the organizers and participants of the "2008 Black Nazarene Fiesta" at the Holy Family Church in Stafford City, Texas. They served as ushers and bearers of the Black Nazarene statue and helped in the preparation of the place of activity.

Together with them is the NARAPHIL president who assisted them in rendering services to the Black Nazarene organizers. Hopefully they'll be able to do some arnis exhibition next year as part of their contribution in the festivities.

The tradition continues .....

The NARAPHIL leadership since the time it was conceived have the vision of making it into an institution for excellence in its field of endeavor. Never did we realize that the tradition we inherited from the instructors and its management was a legacy for the development of our own success in our careers.

Today that tradition is what we are trying to bestow among the young Turks of the PHILMAT to continue and hope that they may pass them to the next generation with the same enthusiasm, dedication and commitment. They are the grassroots of NARAPHIL and future leaders of the institution if not leaders of their own community and businesses.

This program which was formally initiated by the NARAPHIL Corps on instructors and extended over to the PHILMAT 1st generation had a tremendous impact in their cohesiveness or camaraderie. It became a tradition to hold such various seminar/workshop not only trying to hone their arnis skills but also covering different topics related to their personality development, leadership potentials, community development and even martial arts diplomacy.

"Team Building" is the initial step in trying to determine each and every participants potential and where one my fit into the team to form a working and efficient group regardless of age, intelligence and social status. As the process progresses to the next level, a new challenge is brought unto them as more participants joining them and others may fall behind if they are not only able to meet the standard criteria for development set forth unto them.

Teaching by example

Col. Bong Del Camat and Cmdt. Jun Martinada are two examples of dedicated and committed instructors and both former members of the PHILMAT 1st generation but differ from the generation of instructors from where they came from. Bro. Jun belongs to the 3rd generation while Bro. Bong comes from the 5th generation of NARAPHIL instructors.

Both can be emulated for their own professional success in their own field. They will always acknowledge that the personality and integrity they have achieved from their position are but the products of what they have imbibed with their PHILMAT peers.

One may keep on wondering why such people of stature still give their family time for these young Turks without any compensation. The answer is ........................ because they believe in a noble cause, "Anything that is planted right is expected to have a good harvest, so anything that is taught just and right will always be carried on as a concrete tradition". Its just a legacy that they are trying to bestow so they have to do it right!

These three seniors - Bros. Rene, Rey and Jun are
also learning and trying to reminisce the past.

Lucky for these participants to have such Mentor. Who knows in a few years time, they will probably say, it has been their privilege to have been mentored by General Bong Del Camat. Like us, it has been an honor and privileged to have been mentored by five NARAPHIL Arnis Grandmasters. A rare privilege that can never be duplicated.

So young Turks, take all those opportunities because they shall be the backbone of your confidence and spirit.

The vision

In order for a team to work and start achieving things, it must start from the very beginning, i.e. team work. That is the primary objective of this seminar/workshop. Making every member fit into the jig-saw puzzle (team) until each and everyone becomes the part of the whole picture of that puzzle. So each and every member has its own uniqueness and part of that puzzle otherwise it will never be completed.

As shown below, some members are planning, organizing, and preparing all the necessary materials in order to accomplish the challenge set forth unto them. Learn to visualize that dream and create it into a reality for things to succeed. Each member are learning to take responsibility and help in the building process of a strong and cohesive team. Now ready to take the next step of the challenge.

The emergence of these resilient group of dedicated NARAPHIL instructors whose leadership and credentials undeniably beyond doubt, are considered true Arnisadores on their own right! Patiently planning and creating more and more avenues for the young Turks to develop their potentials as they slowly mature into a responsible members of the organization.

They still believe that these young Turks are like wine, that as they are aged and becomes mature, the better they taste and mellow like wine. Like them, their encased ideals, dedication and commitment have made them sweeter (better) and mellower (stronger) like the wine. For it really comes from their heart and nothing else but to say, "For the love of arnis"!

Planning for the next stage!

For every endeavor comes a challenge, a unique activity, a different perspective and a different probable outcome. All these things are but a part of that planning that needs all the consideration to produce a positive output. But most of all ........ it's the teamwork that counts in the end of a successful activity.

The instructors and the participants, both utilizes same concept as shown on above and below pictures. Both trying to achieve the challenge that has been set unto them and be successful enough to produce a good outcome.

Part 1: A New Kind of Arnis Tournament!

Cavite has been a memorable place to start with NARAPHIL activities not only of the beautiful places that abounds it or the rich historical background of the province ......... but the very birth place of the NARAPHIL's one organizational pillars - the Liping Maharlika.

She has been the forefront in sponsoring arnis activities and became an ardent partner of NARAPHIL in almost all of its endeavors. Their broad base professional background and management skills and experiences is what made it stood to the test of time.

These dedicated ladies and gentlemen who find time to promote arnis with their stature is something I can only say - what a noble cause!

They were the same breed of people who pioneered the very first non-contact type of arnis team tournament twenty-eight years ago at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex gymnastics arena. Their primary objective was to bring the different NARAPHIL affliate clubs closer thru a competitive arnis sport that emphasizes on the cultural aspect of it.

As years passed, that non-contact type became of what is todays full contact team tournament which was held annually until 1997.

This 2007, we are bringing back that concept into reality for people who would like to see a different kind of arnis tournament that emphasizes on the cultural nature of arnis. By inviting different groups and styles, we hope that our fellowmen will learn to appreciate it and help preserve each of their own styles. Each group are given time to freely showcase their styles and techniques thru cultural presentation within the bounds of arnis per se.

Today, we look forward for this kind of alternative arnis competition as adjunct to the present full-contact that most of the other arnis tournaments being conducted.

The Participants

Four teams with not less than sixteen members participated in that inaugural arnis competition with a big cash prizes awaited the winners of the event. Fifteen thousand pesos for the Champion, Ten thousand pesos for the First Runner-up and Five thousand pesos for the Second Runner-up.

NARAPHIL is looking forward for bigger participants next year with a stiffer competition and more areas of innovation in team scoring to achieve the over-all Championship prize.

2007 NARAPHIL Arnis Tournament

(Cultural Presentation Exhibition/Competition)

This tournament is geared and designed as an alternative competition that delved more on the cultural aspect of arnis. It may be categorized as a non-contact type and showcases the group talents in group Form and team skills, including choreography and interpretation of their own styles.

The origin of this rules and concept came from the first NARAPHIL Inter-Club Competition/Exhibition in the early 1980's. This was due to the collective efforts of the PHILMAT and upon opproval of the NARAPHIL Board for its promulgation.

The rules were divided into two portions; namely the basic presentation of their own styles and the special number which usually decides the result. The first part is given ten-minutes to showcase their basics and then three-minutes on the special number.

Groups were then categorized into three Levels; the PRIMER, the JUNIOR and the SENIOR Level. Each team should not be less than sixteen actual participants or more than thirty. In case of a tie, the team with more number of participants is usually given heavier advantage point from the lesser team.

This was the old simple rule then!

Recently, an American Filipino martial arts enthusiast came to visit the country to cover some articles for his e-mail publication - FMA Digest and met the officers and staff with NARAPHIL for a dinner hosted by the latter.

His name is Mr. Steven Dowd, publisher of the FMA Digest and resides in Nevada, USA. He has studied the Filipino martial arts for quite sometime and met different practitioners of the art almost through out the archipelago. He concentrate more of his articles on Filipino Martial Arts, that's how he called his e-mail publication FMA Digest.

He came over to the Philippines to meet long time old friends and also do some articles for other arnis groups and related martial arts. He was introduced to NARAPHIL by Bro. Samuel "Bambit" Dulay of the IMAF to write some articles about the organization and its activities.

The article is an FMA Digest Special Edition entitled "Inside NARAPHIL". Some of the articles featured were the "Chronicles of Arnis Event", Plans and programs, the different presidents and current officers. It featured the 3 decades of NARAPHIL achievements in the field of arnis.

NARAPHIL is composed of diverse groups of people came together under one obejctive - ARNIS promotion. Such example is the above picture of two different generation - Col. Bong Del Camat of PNP - 5th Generation of Instructor from Esteban Abada High School, and Capt. Rick Sarte (Manager of Pearl Grace Shipmanagement, Inc.) 3rd Generation of Instructor from St. Michael's Academy of Bacoor.

Both still active and devoting their precious time for arnis promotion without expected compensation for their effort but as a contribution of their services for NARAPHIL and country. I would say a noble cause!

Bro. Rey Postrado belongs to the 7th Generation of Instructors "Maginficent 7" - only seven intsructors made it and the last batch from the Nayong Pilipino Arnis Club before its closure in 1997 due to the NAIA Terminal III Airport expansion program.

Mr. Alex dela Cruz, NARAPHIL Chief Instructor and official photographer, whose boundless skills and talents has contributed enormously to the success of NARAPHIL activities at present. He succeeded Engr. Noel Estepa in his photography talent in trying to document all our activities as Bro. Noel did during the earlier years of NARAPHIL. He also belongs to the 5th Generation Instructors from the Nayong Pilipino Arnis Club.

Chief Engr. Zaldie Franco belongs to the 3rd Generation of Instructors of the Luneta Arnis Club and one of the prime movers and benefactor of the PHILMAT. His big heart and love for the arnis and the PHILMAT never ceases him to sponsor their activities and share his wealth to the striving "young turks".

Thank you Bro for all your assistance and we know we cannot repay it ........... but you will always be included in our prayers and thanksgiving!

A New Venture

And so, the new venture has begun with the FMA Digest who will be helping and assisting us in the publication of arnis articles on their e-mail publication. This could have not been possible without the assistance of the IMAF and Sr. Master "Bambit" Dulay.

A tribute to National Artist

On behalf of the NARAPHIL officers and staff, we join the Filipino nation in prayers for the repose of his soul to our beloved National Artist - Ramon A. Obusan.

"Kuya Mon" as we fondly called him, has been with us long before NARAPHIL was conceived, as our cultural mentor, choreographer, part of our research team, comrade in arms, advocator of arnis promotion and numerous research projects on the aspect of arnis. He is the Official Anthropology Consultant of NARAPHIL and has rendered his services for free.

Being the pillars of the world renowned "Bayanihan Dance Company", he was one of the people responsible in giving opportunity for the PHILMAT's (NARAPHIL Cultural Arms) birth and opportunity to perform with other world class performers on the aspect of Arnis as a cultural presenters to the Filipino and foreign audiences.

"Burong Talo" was the most significant presentation ever done by a any cultural performers since it entails an expertise or skill in the use of bladed weapon. The PHILMAT had that talent and was suited for that tribal practice and presentation. Ever since his discovery of these young talents, he methodically guided them in performing more of the tribal war ritual dances which he was able to impart and imbibed in their cultural presentations. We owe it to him!

His values and strict guidance in the implementation of some cultural norms which NARAPHIL is being guided - we owe it to him! Such criticism he made was the use of ranks which he cautioned us not to offend any tribal honor, name, practices or presentations. That is why the organization was given four guidelines to follow in creating ranks in arnis in the future. Two of which came from him - 1. It should maintain the status of Filipinism; and 2. It should not offend tribal communities and practices.

He owns numerous researches and written books that are being used today as good references of cultural norms and practices. What more can we ask for a man of such stature who devoted his life in pursuit of preserving and compiling numerous materials - from unorthrodox cultural dances, costumes, unusual cultural practices and voluminous books he has written and most of all a museum collection of artifacts for the Filipino children to cherish and may have the chance to study about it.

"Kuya Mon" thanks for all your services and the guidance you taught us. Your memories will remain in our hearts forever. You could have been a true "Arnis Grandmaster" but you declined it because it's not your expertise but most of all you want to preserve the people to whom it deserves!

For us you are a TRUE Maharlikan!

May God bless you and we shall offer prayers on behalf of all the people you have helped!

A Taiwanese Film Outfit just visited the Philippines recently and was referred to NARAPHIL for an orientation and briefing, coupled with some demonstration/exhibition, and a workshop seminar regarding our Filipino martial art - Arnis de Mano. Since arnis has gone into a level where it can hold its own among the best martial arts of the world, even the neighboring countries like Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia has started training and consulting various arnis groups and clubs for it. Last year, arnis was already included as an event in the SEA Games.

The Office of Presidential Secretary on Media Affairs was the one responsible in referring them to NARAPHIL. Since they knew that she has been existing for more than three decades, its credibility is something not to reckoned with when it comes to arnis.

The NARAPHIL president is currently in the US on the same mission similar to this activity and hopefully be successful enough to come up with a complimentary activity with her sister organization, the WEKAF.

The senior group (1st generation members) of the PHILMAT augments the performance of the PHILMAT Generation II members. These young turks of NARAPHIL-PHILMAT are the new generation of arnis masters in the making. With the proper guidance, training and care of the seniors will create a new fresh blood of world class arnis performers.

The Liping Maharlika, which financially supports this troupe, will go a long way of fully creating the PHILMAT Generation II. Currently there are sixteen members of the troupe and hopefully will be able to expand in a year time into 42-man team to fill-up the necessary numbers for an hour show anywhere.

Capt. Rick Sarte, Liping Maharlika President and Manager of Pearl Grace Shipmanagement Corp., augments the PHILMAT Generation II presentation together with his old sparring partner and a bank manager, Rene Fernandez, for a "Larong Maharlika" number which they have been doing during their heydays with the PHILMAT. Truly they are an example of the "Arnis Ilustrados"!

Although both gentlemen are very busy with their positions and businesses, they still find time to help in promoting their love for arnis. Mr. Rene Fernandez is the NARAPHIL Treasurer and also a gold medalist in "Karate Kata" during his days in 1973.

Both are pioneeriing members of NARAPHIL since 1975. They have served in different occasions for arnis promotion as sports specialist of the "Siglakas Project" and "Gintong Alay". Their enormous experience in managing groups and planning have place them of what they are now in their own field of endeavor.

Their only objective is to show these young turks of what they can achieve in their lives if they will put their hearts into it and be guided accordingly. There is no limit to the fulfillment of ones dream if all the doors of opportunity are open for their taking. Because they believe that "life is not a process of discovery, but a process of creation".

Cmdt. Jun Martinada, NARAPHIL Secretary General and also school CAT Commandant of San Beda College of Alabang, augments the PHILMAT Generation II with a finale number using the bladed weapon - the Kali. Together with his sparring partner Mr. Reynaldo Postrado, also the Liaison Officer of NARAPHIL and senior instructor, gave the closing number with their awesome skill in the use of bladed weapon.

Like Capt. Sarte and Rene Fernandez, Cmdt. Jun Martinada was also member of the first generation PHILMAT but came later in 1976 when PHILMAT was being organized. He served the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development based in Region III in San Fernando, Pampanga as sports specialist and also the "Siglakas Project".

His assigment in Pampanga generated a lot of arnis activity throughout Region III that eventually culminated with the establishment of the NARAPHIL Regional chapter in 1980.

He was the second back-up perfomer together with Ariel Duran for the "Burong Talo" number and usually perform best with his "Latiko" number and the Disarming Technique.

He is an exceptionally example of a hardworking athlete, who needs to work in order to survive and study, and yet find enough time to devote his leisure time for arnis. Now a fulfilled teacher and ideal family man, he still find time to share his expertise to the young turks for his family time. He believes "Always look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing".

.... and the show goes on!

If you look outside you will not know where you are heading. Look inside. Looking outside, you dream. Looking inside, you awaken. Eyes provide sight. Heart provides insight.

So young turks listen to the wisdom of your instructors and emulate of what they have achieved in their life. They have inequities but follow the good things they have taught you. You create your own future and name, they only open the avenues for you to pass. Let other bestow the fame on you and not you bestow your own name.

Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don't suffer. With that experience their life becomes better, not bitter.

These are only some of the things that we want to share with you - Young turks of NARAPHIL. So train well and polish your skills that you may attain excellence in your arnis!

NARAPHIL Supports the FMA Festival 2006

Since 1990, NARAPHIL has been supporting different arnis activities regardless of affiliation for the promotion of our indigenous martial arts - Arnis de Mano! Many things has been written for and against NARAPHIL but never did they criticizes people who think otherwise of the goodness for the sake of arnis. There is only one goal of the organization, i. e. to help for the promotion of arnis within our country for the sake of the legacy that our forebears has handed unto us.

There are only a handful of Grandmasters who now lives and practice in the way of the art and the new generations of would-be grandmasters is what NARAPHIL feared most because of their way of perception towards the art - commercialization! The spirit of being a gentleman is slowly being eroded for the benefit of winning honor in tournament even at the cost of cheating and the worst is maiming his opponent for it. Gone are the days of the "Illustrados of Arnis".

The possible solution to this is going back to the grassroots and training these young turks to become what is to be a gentleman. Teaching them to live in the way of arnis - honest, just and spiritually competent. For arnis has been said, "It is the sports of the Filipino gentlemen". It may take years to developed them but the future is vivid and the doors has been opened for better opportunities to live a decent and honest life as a Filipino should be.

These generations of PHILMAT are still lucky to have Capt. Rick Sarte, Rene Fernandez, Prof. Ma. Luz Arroyo, Chief Engr. Zaldie Franco, Alex dela Cruz, Junch Martinada, Mike dela Cruz, Rey Postrado and Gudo Corpin as dedicated instructors to their cause.

The success of the event could have not been possible if not for the efforts of these instructors who meticulously and patiently guiding them in their training and development. They have sacrificed a lot of their family time to these young turks in the hope that they will do the same when time comes for them to serve the organization. These people, who are leaders and managers in their own field, came a long long way to this stage in their lives who still dedicated their time and money to developed and maintain these new young turks - PHILMAT Generation II.

Fulfilling a dream 30 years ago as a member of the First generation of the PHILMAT was somewhat impossible and frustrating. But it never became an obstacle for each and every member to pursue their career and still be a part of PHILMAT. Proud to say that everybody were all successful enough to become professionals, businessmen and career government servants and some even became leaders and managers of their own businesses. They have performed beyond any arnis groups into the level of world class arnisadores.

I can never recall any group who came close to them when it comes to arnis cultural performances for they have excelled beyond their senior instructors in skills and knowledge of the art. Their farewell performance in 1988 as a group was stunning when they won the 2nd over-all in the "Asian Martial Arts Festival" at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. It was participated by 6 countries and 11 leading martial arts clubs/group in the country.

Today these generation of young turks hopefully will surpass the achievement of the First generation of PHILMAT and also be given the chance to showcase them abroad. With the help of the current members of the previous troupe willing to extend their hand will surely fulfill those dreams we've cherished and still wish it comes into reality. For we still believe that unity comes with teamwork and with that nothing is impossible if one really puts his heart into it. I still believe that each and everyone has still the heart of arnis in them.

When I came to see this pictures in comparison from their last year performances and training at Luneta, they have came a long long way in their training. Kudos guys for a job well done and hopefully you'll improve them further and developed them into future arnis masters if not leaders and mangers of their own field.

These group performance has always been a graceful thing to watch as an expectator. With the continous twirling motion of the cane that moves around the body similar to the old styles. Legend has it that a master of such technique, one can protect himself from flying daggers and even pebbles thrown unto him.

This is the making of Zaldie. With the proper guidance and training, it won't be too far from even parr or surpassing "Helicopter Zaldie". A technique using the poles in rotating it around his body as fast as the rotor blade of a chopper producing a unique whistling sound of the cane as it moves and twirls in the air and around his body in a continuous motion.

The Basics

This is where they begin. The foundation of their knowledge. The monotonous repetition of the technique like the litany of the Rosary that even while sleeping keeps on coming back over-and-over again. Yes!, this is how it should be in order to attain excellence in the art. This is where the proper body forms and executions are slowly evolving like the evolution of man. Once attained will surely be a part of your life whenever you execute a technique.

So train well young turks ............. you are the next generation of PHILMAT!

NARAPHIL Reminisce: SMHS Project

1976 Summer Basic Arnis Course

for

P. E. Teachers

Every Summer vacation, P. E. Teachers are looking forward for study credits necessary for their promotion and level upgrading offered by different institution for them. NARAPHIL has embarked simultaneous summer-workshop for P. E. teachers willing to undergo the "Basic Arnis Course" for free in order to help the association in promoting arnis awareness and implement a standard system of teaching nationwide.

In 1976 alone, they were able to conduct at least five modules on five different regions in the country as part of their massive promotional campaign. One of the most promising place with a lot of memories to recount was in San Miguel, the last town of Bulacan going to Nueva Ecija.

People there are very accommodating and hospitable. Typical of the Fillipino hospitality which I personally believe is slowly fading among the rural areas. Their means of livelihood are more on agricultural like rice production but their best specialties is "Bulacan sweets". This is the town where sweet Filipino delicacies can be found.

This is the place where we witnessed the use of long pole - extended cane. Their game involves balancing over two pieces of bamboo bridge trying to hit each other inorder to cross over it. This is a part of their local festivities in celebrating their Patron Saint - St. Michael.

The participants

Teaching the teachers was much more of a fun and challenging considering the fact that majority of them were half of our age if not more than our parents but we never had problems with respect. They showed their true leadership by following the example of being a good follower as well as mentors.

Being the rookie among the instructors, is somewhat a good exposure with the team in terms of experience. Since that day, I had a different perspective of how should a leader act in the future if that time comes when the new breed of Turks comes around to fill the vacuum we will be leaving around.

Our host

We would like to thank our host who bear with us for a week of non-stop hospitality in accommodating us in their humble house and member of their household who truly showed their spirit of Filipinism. We had a lot of fun and joyful memories especially for a rookie like me who joined my seniors for the first time for such event.

The principal, Mrs. Ventura, who gave us the opportunity and break to showcase our ability to impart our special knowledge to her faculties and students to learn the art and the subsequent addition to their physical education curriculum and establishment of an arnis club.

An Honor

Being honored as a Mentor is something of a big accomplishment on my part and having imparted my knowledge and skills. It is like planting a seed that someday we may see the fruits of our labor ................... and yes, we are practically seeing now that fruits with the emergence of numerous arnis groups and activities going left and right.

I'm proud to say, ........................ we did our part!

Mentoring the leaders

Whenever I see my seniors, I'm so curious of what they try to project to their students and the manner they communicate with them especially considering the age gap between us and them. This is where one must learn to adjust on the level of status one is handling and the level of knowledge that is expected from them. Three important considerations should be taken seriously and i.e. age, status and level of knowledge.

A souvenir to remember .......

For once I remember ……………… this is where it started and the break that took me of where I am today! Opportunity only comes and pass-by in our lives; we may never pass this road again!

Oldest published arnis
book

What makes the NARAPHIL a primary institution of arnis learning is not only the people behind it, but the vast resources that has been accumulated for years of existence.

For instance, they have one of the oldest book probably published in existence. It was published in 1957 by the U.P. Press Inc. and authored by Mr. Placido Yambao et. al. It is entitled "Mga Karunungan sa Larong Arnis" and was written in a Pilipino vernacular language. This is where most of those book presently in existence got their terminologies for their own terminologies of techniques.

In 1974, a group of young high school boys from Ramon Magsaysay High School of Manila joined by Romeo Mascardo and Ramon Obusan launched a search campaign to locate the group of Mr. Yambao and company in the northern part province of Manila - Hagonoy, Bulacan. This was the place where the book was believed to have been conceived and written according to the account in the book but unfortunately, even the public officials seems to have no record or track of the people in it.

Probably their search never proved fruitless because the book itself is a proof of the knowledge is really in existence long before it became popular later in the succeeding years. One reason was to give honor to the five people who joined together for the publication of that book, namely: Palcido Yambao, Buenaventura Mirafuente, Luis Cruz, Juan Aclan and Francisco dela Cruz.

These five gentlemen were also responsible in the formation of their own group in 1931 as the "Kapisanan ng Dunong at Lakas at ng Tabak ni Bonifacio - Order of Bonifacio".

According to the book, they traveled from places during May festivities to showcase their knowledge and skills in arnis by performing series of exhibitions. Later in 1950's, they have started teaching to some few school institution and one of them was at "Manila High School" on August 6, 1954 as a regular physical education subject.

The book has less than a hundred pages and is divided into three parts namely; a semi-comprehensive history of arnis, the basics and terminologies and the proposed rules and regulations in the governance of arnis tournament. The first few pages was dedicated to the five personalities with their brief history and personal account in their knowledge of the art. The basics has a complete pictorials and description of each technique.

What makes this book very interesting, was the way they were carefully arranged and crafted for easy comprehension and the terms they used in each technique which we believed this is where the other authors got their terms from it.

Therefore, we believe it is appropriate and high time that due recognition should be given to them for their efforts and Filipinism. They have raised the quality of arnis knowledge to where it is today.

From the bottom of our hearts, we salute you gentlemen for all the efforts you have contributed in documenting our knowledge of the art!

Arnis, the native art of stickfighting has its origins in the dawn of Philippine history ………… For when the Spanish conquerors came to the islands, they found the native proficient in its practice. It was then called “Kali” and was fought with bladed weapons.

Perhaps in dread of its deadly potentials, the conquerors suppressed its practice. Only a brave and resolute few succeeded in passing on its secrets to future generations. To them we owe our present knowledge of this ancient art.

Today, arnis has advance to a level where it can hold it’s own among the martial arts of the world. Truly Filipino in origin and spirit it remains as one of our most precious legacies from the past.

The clashes of today’s canes are but echoes from a distant past .......

.......... when the cries of fighting men resounded like thunder. This is “Burong Talo” from the beginning!

The legacy left by our forebears is still fresh in the blood of today’s youth ………… and perhaps will remain in so in the generations to come.

Sacrifices has to be made in order to fulfill our dreams! These sacrifices are not just for our ownselves but for our loved-ones like what Jesus did for us! He sacrificed his life so that our sins maybe cleansed. How many more Jesus we need in order to put back ourselves into the right path???

Wake up brothers and sisters, it's time for us to reflect our misgivings and misdeeds. The young turks are watching us. What they see ..... they shall do; what they hear ....... is what they shall say! Let's show them the good things or deeds so they may multiply.
