The "Moonlight Serenade"

"Moonlight Serenade"
(Maiden Voyage)

28 December 2008
Houston, Texas

People who are adept with music, this is one beautiful classical sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven, my favorite actually .............. but sorry to say it's not!

It was composed in Japan and not in Vienna, and this is her first "maiden voyage"! Zaldie was the conductor together with his Pearl Grace crew! They stayed for sixteen days in Japan before sailing her to the seas! Yes, when he toured us around the ship with Mely, you can still smell the raw paint to all its cabin and hallways.

The crew were all Filipinos and had a real good times with them! But as usual, they are bored and have no friends or relatives around to tour them, unlike Zaldie! Unfortunately I can not also accommodate them and that they have to spend their Christmas in their ship.

Zaldie was able to do a good shopping spree, because all the stores were on for the post-Christmas sale. So he was frantic to buy things and keeps computing the prices from dollars to pesos - and says it was really a big, big discount. He started paying his items with the green bucks and the cashiers were all astonished for all the money coming out of his wallet, crispy, unblemished and most of all smells like a dollar!!! He! he! he!

Lahat ng kanyang $100 bills ay inaaninag and looking for it - counterfeit ba ito o hindi!!! We were both laughing because we looked liked hoodlums laundering the monies! Everyone is paying their bills with plastic money while Zaldie is paying it with a hard cash, and everyone is looking. Kasi naman nakadamit lang kami ng akala mong very poor baga!???

Sabi nga niya eh, "Don't worry about it, galing pa yan sa Japan, pero printed pa rin dito sa States at hindi sa Japan!". He! he! he!

Bro. Zaldie, while we were board on your ship, I keep on wondering how you manage to stay without getting sea-sick with its continous waving motion. That brief stay with you, I can really say I'm not well good probably in travelling with ships. No matter how good a swimmer I am! He! he! he!

The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold and even not sunny for your brief visit! It only implies that everything was in place for your visit! Ho! ho! ho!

I hope all our Bros. back there could have a chance to visit me here and enjoy my simple hospitality, ika nga ......... Pinoy pa rin!

And so the tour goes on ..............

Welcome to Texas

I hope you can always have the chance to visit us again here in Texas and also hoping that you enjoyed your brief visit and stay here! Godspeed on your voyage! 'Til next visit!

"Don't mess with Texas"

That's his T-shirt logo ..........

Thanks for your visit Bro!

Hello Manong,
This is Blanche again. I just joined the Naraphil group in FB. I just want to be clarified about the word "sinawali" and "arnis". I thought that "arnis" is the art of stick-fighting and "sinawali" is the style used in the art of stick-fighting. What's the difference? I might be using some contradicting terminologies while i am promoting this art privately to my son. I guess I was one of your stubborn--- if not troubled, students before, ha!ha!ha! Hard-of-hearing! Yay! and now at 50, can't recall much anymore.---gotta get one of those time-machines or total-recall electronic gadgets! Does the Naraphil FB group also falls on the same org as the one in Rizal Memorial?

Thanks...

Sis Blanche,

Some regions in the Philippines (Central Luzon) uses "Sinawali" as another term for arnis, but according to arnis historians it denotes more of a style in fighting rather than the terminology for "arnis".

For instance, The Liping Maharlika has 12 kinds of sinawali, and we call it "Isang Dosenang Sinawali". This style can use a single stick or a doble baston, and the sequence of movements may vary from 4-strokes movement to 6-strokes with the alternating use of both hands striking the temples and knees of the opponent.

This is documented in our training manuals in the Advance course. What we have taught you before that you see in our book or training manual is the "Standard Sinawali" (Sinawaling Pamantayan) that uses doble baston and has 6-strokes movement.

Sinawali alone is a very fascinating style and can be categorized as a full chapter in the Manual or a separate book because of its context and manner of execution. Its actually a good exercise and a beautiful cultural presentation if you knew how they are expressed and played as a team.

An example for that is the "Four-some Sinawali" (Sinawaling Apatan). This style of sinawali is executed by 4 people playing simultaneuosly in alternating fashion, or the "Chain Sinawali" (Cadenang Sinawali) which utilizes 6 players to hundreds in a circular fashion or straight row doing sinawali alternately from each side.

I hope you'll have sometime to witness it how they are played. They truly represent a good Regional Variation of arnis.

Regarding your querries about the Rizal Memorial Arnis Club, its just one of the group of NARAPHIL and that group actually belongs to the Liping Maharlika arnis group like the Nayong Pilipino Arnis Club that was assigned to me. NARAPHIL has so many arnis groups attached to her like the Doce Pares, Scientific Lightning, Illustrisimo, Modern Arnis, Pecate Arnis, Menar Arnis etc. It just happen that we were the first instructors trained during your heydays that were assigned in Makiling. Most of the instructors that came to Makiling were Maharlika members like us - The Young Turks during those times! He! he! he! The rest came from different community based clubs like the Tanods and other arnis group.

I hope I was able to help you out regarding your inquiries. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions regarding arnis.

Thanks for your querries! Regards to your son! God bless!
